SAFETY, HEALTH & THE ENVIRONMENT

AIM OF THE MODULE

The aim of this module is to provide learners with the skills to improve their safety awareness in a small business or workplace. Learners will be able to conduct an analysis of risks and hazards and identify health and hygiene issues that impact on the workplace. Good housekeeping practices are introduced and the use of personal protective equipment and personal protective clothing is explained in an appropriate context. The module concludes with a discussion of basic emergency procedures and first aid appropriate for a business environment.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

On completion of this module the learner will be able to:

  • Explain health and safety requirements for a small business
  • Discuss the rights and responsibilities of employers and employees
  • Assess risks in the workplace
  • Specify relevant safety rules
  • Identify health and hygiene risks while working with food
  • Define housekeeping practices
  • Understand and explain safety signage
  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic first aid procedures

A number of short courses are available for entrepreneurs and owners of small or medium businesses who want to improve their managerial skills and gain a better understanding of the business environment in which they operate.
